The Avars were Turkic nomads who inhabited the Eurasian steppes and were known for being feared horse
archers, much like their ancestors, the Huns. Avars are known for having inhabited Hungary, after the Huns disappeared. They are normally ruled by a chief, called a khagan, which is similar to the later Mongol Khan.

The Avars were pagans around the 5th Century AD (in modern times, Avars are Sunni Muslim) and they migrated into the North Caucasus region of Russia in 555 AD. Many Avars inhabited what is now modern day Dagestan in Russia.
